Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I like a particular style, but slightly wider/narrower. Is this possible? A: Yes, DORA is in a class of its own when it comes to flexibility. In almost all cases widths and thicknesses can be varied to suit your requirements.
Q: How quickly can I have a Dora ring? A: DORA retail stockists can generally supply their customers with a DORA ring inside three weeks.
Q: Are Dora rings allergy friendly? A: Yes, as DORA rings are made in Europe they must conform to European standards which are the toughest in the world. DORA are also sold in the USA so we had the American Assay & Gemological office conduct a series of tests for corrosion, wear and nickel release. The results reported that the nickel release in 18k & 9k white gold registered just 0.1 milligram per square centimetre of the item per week. The maximum nickel release standard allowed is 0.5 milligrams per square centimetre of the item per week
Q: What about Titanium, can that cause an allergic reaction? A: Titanium is a natural metal, the hardest natural metal in the world. Titanium is 100% hypoallergenic which means it will not produce skin irritations or discolourations.
Q: What does 9 carat mean and what is the differnce between 9k, 14k & 18k gold? A: Pure gold is too soft and difficult for jewellers to work with so gold is alloyed with other metals such as copper, zinc and silver for jewellery purpose. The carat system is a measure of the amount of the gold in the finished alloy. Pure gold is measued as 24k, so in the case of 9k gold there are 9 parts of gold out of the 24 parts, in 14k there are 14 parts of gold and in 18k there are 18 parts of gold. These gold carat markings can also be written as a percentage of the gold in the ring, for example 9k can be written as 375 which is 37.5% gold, 14k is 585 (58.5%) and 18k is 750 (75%).
Q: What stamps should I look for in a genuine DORA ring? A: The most important stamp to look for to confirm you are buying a genuine DORA ring is the DORA stamp which is a capital D in a circle. Your DORA ring will also have a metal stamp to signify the metal used in the construction of the ring. At DORA we use 375 for 9k, 585 for 14k, 750 for 18k, TITAN for titanium, PALLADIUM for palladium and PLAT for platinum. Q: What is white gold? A: Pure gold is a beautiful deep yellow colour, so to produce white gold, yellow gold is mixed with other metals such as copper, zinc, nickel, palladium and silver.
Q: Why is white gold plated with Rhodium? A: As pure gold is a yellow colour, any alloy to produce white gold will result in a white colour with a yellowish look. In Australia and New Zealand DORA chooses to plate the white gold with rhodium to produce an extremely bright and white finish. This plating will wear off after time at which you can choose to have the ring replated or leave it with the natural white gold look. If you prefer the natural colour of white gold, please advise us when we are producing your ring and we will not plate your ring with rhodium.
Q: What is Platinum? A: Platinum is a naturally occuring precious metal which is very dense and because of this, 70% heavier than 18k gold. This denseness makes it extremely long wearing and as it is used by DORA in a 95% pure state it's also whiter then 18ct white gold, so there is no need to rhodium plate it. The only drawback to platinum is its cost, which due to the cost of the raw material, the difficulty of manufacture and the extreme heaviness of the material a platinum ring is almost three times more than 18k gold.
Q: What is Palladium? A: Palladium is a naturally occuring precious metal which is one of the five metals comprising the platinum suite of metals. Like platinum it is used in a 95% pure state, so it is a white metal that does not require rhodium plating. It is less dense than platinum and approximately equivalent to 14k gold in its weight. Cost wise a ring made from palladium is priced between 9k and 14k gold.
Q: 18k, 14k or 9k gold, which should I choose? A: As 18k yellow gold is 75% pure gold while 9k is only 37.5% pure gold, the 18k yellow colour is deeper and brighter than 9k yellow gold. 18k is also heavier and has a more luxurious feel to it and tends to wear and look better over a longer period of time. 14k with 58.5% pure gold content combines an attractive colour and feel to it and price wise sits beautifully midway between 18k and 9k. However if budget is a consideration than a DORA 9k is a good alternative. Importantly all DORA rings are covered by the same warranty regardless of what carat gold they are. Q: Can I have my DORA ring engraved? A: When you are ordering your DORA ring, the salesperson can show you samples of the engraving styles that can be laser engraved at the DORA factory. The best news is that this service is provided free of charge provided it is done at the time of manufacture.
