You’re on the prowl for that perfect wedding ring. There’s just one problem: you haven’t the foggiest idea where to start!

When it comes to shopping for men’s wedding rings, you can’t do things by halves – you’ll want your ring to be absolutely perfect.

Confused? Don’t know where to begin? Luckily for you, the team from Dora are here to help.

1) Start by budgeting

Money: none of us ever have enough of it!

When planning for your wedding expenses, you should allot at least 5% of the budget on your wedding ring.

Determining a budget will enable you to put limits on how much you are going to spend on your wedding ring, and can also save you from overspending or underspending on your wedding band.

2) Choose a ring that matches the occasion

At Dora, we recommend that you give your wedding ring purchase some serious thoughts about your choice of ring and how your choice will stand up to long term wear and tear.

Specifically, we ask you to give serious consideration to the fact that the wedding ring you choose will be the ring you will probably wear for the rest of your life.

While a tungsten ring or a titanium ring might be budget-friendly and look okay on the day of purchase, but it will not be a ring that you will look at with admiration in the years that follow. These rings don’t age well and they don’t gain value.

Honestly, pure titanium rings often end up looking like a ring that wants an early retirement, to be thrown in a drawer somewhere and forgotten!

Precious metals like gold and platinum are metals that are beautiful for eternity. They look and feel better for the duration of your life, and are potentially something to be handed down to the next generation.

Men’s wedding bands made from precious metals such as gold or platinum also wear better because they have a nice weight. They feel beautiful on the finger and they can easily be re-finished and re-polished after a few years of wear.

At the end of the day you want one of the few constant reminders of your wedding day and marriage to be one that you can admire on your finger, not one that sits in a drawer somewhere!

3) Choose the type of metal for your lifestyle

Perhaps you’re leaning towards yellow gold, owing to its classic appearance. Alternatively, you might be leaning towards the modern, white appearance of a platinum ring.

Platinum is a beautiful white metal that feels like a real wedding band. If you’re the active type and potentially a bit tough on your ring, you might want to consider platinum 600.

This alloyed platinum (60% platinum) is extremely tough and hard wearing, will never require rhodium plating and will look better for longer.

Whichever material you choose, it’s important to look beyond appearances!

That’s because the metal type you choose have different levels of durability and longevity. All metals have unique qualities, which directly influences:

  • What happens to your ring as it ages
  • General wear and tear
  • Whether or not it can be resized in the future
  • How much you’ll have to pay

Theses are just some of the considerations you’ll have to keep in mind when selecting a ring material – as you can see, appearance isn’t everything!

4) Choose your colour

Options for men’s wedding bands are plentiful. There are lots of different metal types and colour combinations to consider.

Once you’ve decided on a gold wedding ring the next step is to select a colour:

  • Traditional yellow gold
  • Rose or pink gold
  • While gold

And by mixing gold with other metals, like titanium and gold or carbon fibre and gold you can achieve a modern and contemporary look that highlights the different metals and contrasting colours.

Rose gold combined with carbon fibre has been a very popular combination in recent times (rose gold & black). White gold combined with titanium (white gold and grey) is another popular choice for men’s wedding bands.

Can’t make your mind up? You don’t have to choose – Dora’s catalogue of men’s wedding rings also includes multicolour rings.

These rings combine different metals and colours to create unique wedding bands – perfect for men looking for something a little different.

5) Ring design and style

Your ring is a fashion statement – as such, you’ll want your wedding ring to look fantastic!

In particular, you’ll want to think about:

  • Textures
  • Polish
  • Brushing
  • Precious stones (white and black diamonds)

Obviously, this is an extremely personal choice which we can’t really help out with much – only you know your personal style and taste, after all!

What we can say however is that certain types of men’s wedding rings lend themselves to certain appearances.

For example, men who prefer a classic or traditional style may gravitate towards gold as their go-to option, while men who are outgoing and would want a modern touch on their ring may choose gold combined with titanium or carbon fibre.

Another thing to think about is whether or not your ring fits in your social and work circles. For example, if you work in a more conservative field, an unconventional ring made of carbon fibre may not fly (unfortunately!)

6) Size matters

It can be quite challenging to determine the size of your ring finger. While there are online tools that you can use, nothing quite comes close to visiting a jewellery store and getting your exact ring size for reference.

Your local jeweller will have the necessary tools and sizing kits to get your finger perfectly and professionally sized and fitted.

And if your nearest jeweller is also a Dora stockist, you’ll have the benefit of being fitted with the Dora ring sizing kit. It’s a sizing kit that looks and feels as professional as it is exacting.

7) Make your ring more personal by going customised

Make your ring mean more with a customised wedding ring.

Your wedding ring is yours, and yours alone. By working alongside your jeweller to customise your Dora wedding band you are adding your personality into the creation of your wedding band. You might want your wedding band to be a little wider or a different colour combination, or you might want to completely implement some individual ideas into the design.

Anything’s possible. That’s exactly why Dora offers custom men’s wedding rings, made for you.

We also offer ring engraving, allowing you to express your sentiments on your wedding ring.

Whether it’s your name, a quote with deep personal significance, or lyrics from your couple song. We’ve even had a couple of customers request lines from their favourite movie!
