Gold or platinum – decisions, decisions!
When browsing men’s wedding rings, your choice of metal is one of the first things you consider.
And that brings us to today’s topic.
When it comes to men’s wedding rings, gold rules the roost, and for good reason.
At DORA, gold is our favourite (and best-selling) metal – however, platinum is fast catching up in popularity!
Both of these precious metals have their own unique qualities and traits which can affect their durability and your comfort.
Which metal should I choose for my wedding ring?
When it comes to choosing your wedding ring, the final decision is in your hands.
While we may be big advocates for gold rings here at DORA, at the end of the day, it’s your wedding ring – the only opinion that matters is yours.
Of course, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t make an informed decision!
As two different metals, gold and platinum have unique qualities, which you should think about while ring shopping…

Will one cost more than the other?
When it comes to men’s wedding rings, we don’t like getting distracted by money. After all, you can’t put a dollar value on something as important as your marriage, and the physical item that represents it!
A Platinum (950) ring is generally slightly higher in cost than 18ct white gold but that mostly comes down to weight. Platinum (950) is approximately 40% heavier than 18ct (750) white gold.
Due to its rarity, platinum is popular among men who want their wedding bands to communicate exclusivity and wealth beyond what even gold can offer.
So expect to pay a bit more for platinum, but at the end of the day both are quality metals and at Dora, we like to emphasise that quality actually saves you money.
Think about that last pair of nice shoes you bought. Expensive at the time but with each wear they feel more comfortable and the money you spent seems like a distant memory. Compare that to a cheap pair of shoes that feel uncomfortable and last a short time. In the long run quality saves money.
If you like platinum but the price-tag is a bit steep, consider Dora’s Platinum 600 range. It’s an innovative collection, using 600 parts platinum (60%) and 400 parts alloy (40%) that provides the hard wearing qualities of platinum at a more affordable cost.
Appearance
Many men choose platinum for its clean, bright and vivid appearance. As a naturally white metal, platinum offers a brilliant white colour, which is preferred by men who desire a sleek, more contemporary look.
By contrast, gold offers a refined, traditional appearance. As we’ve mentioned before, gold has been the metal of choice since ancient antiquity. As a result, gold is the metal of choice for those seeking a timeless appearance with their wedding band.
Not to mention, as a naturally yellow metal, gold also offers a softer and warmer tone.
Again, the decision comes down to you and your personal taste.
Before you decide however, we feel like it’s worth mentioning that yellow gold isn’t the only option – for example, white gold rings offer a similar appearance to platinum at prices closer to what you’d pay for gold.
By adding in other alloys to the metal, jewellery manufacturers like DORA are able to create white or pink rose gold rings.

How do the two stack up in durability?
Men’s wedding bands and rings are intended to be worn for life – as such, it’s essential that you choose a ring that is durable, and which will go the distance.
In our experience, gold men’s wedding rings and platinum rings are both very maintenance friendly.
True, platinum rings are harder-wearing, and are less prone to breaking and bending than gold, which can be a plus if you’re worried about damage.
However, very few gold rings are made of pure gold.
In fact, some of the alloys that are mixed into gold will provide additional strength and durability into the ring.
This makes it more suited to the sort of day-to-day impacts men’s wedding rings deal with, and can make gold look nicer for longer.
Which one makes for a more comfortable men’s wedding band?
Did you know? Platinum is denser than gold – about 20% denser, to be exact.
While the difference isn’t much, it’s important to keep in mind that a platinum ring will feel heavier.
If you’re worried about weight, choosing gold for your men’s wedding ring might be the better choice!
Resizing
Platinum and Gold are both easy to resize.
Gold in particular is a highly malleable metal – and that’s a good thing, as it makes it easy to resize your ring if you feel it starting to get tight, or if it slides off too easily.
And when you choose any DORA ring, you’ll be covered by a lifetime warranty.
In addition to protecting you against manufacturing faults, our ring replacement policy is your insurance policy if your ring becomes too loose or too tight. If this happens simply take your ring back to the place of purchase and Dora will exchange your ring in the new size you require free of charge! Conditions Apply. See website for conditions.
