Girls like a man with a plan – especially when it comes to the important things, like your wedding day!
So the big day’s almost upon you – only a little while longer now! You and your spouse have planned out just about everything, from the decor, to the menu, to the seating arrangement, and you’ve chosen a men’s wedding ring together.
One area that even the most meticulous men overlook? Preparing for all the little emergencies that pop up on the day itself.
A lot of guys rock up on the day itself without accounting for the little things that can go wrong – even the best-organised among us are guilty of it.
Luckily, we’re here to help with our last-minute groom wedding day checklist!
Make sure you leave enough time between your bucks party and the big day
For a lot of guys, their bucks party is their final chance to hit the town and go wild before the responsibilities of married life kick in.
We get it, you want to party and celebrate your final night as a bachelor.
Unfortunately, a lot of guys take it a little bit too far.
Your wedding is the day that your new marriage is made official. You’ll want to remember the event for years to come – NOT the killer hangover you were dealing with.
Yes, the movies make it look pretty fun and wacky, and it certainly can be a good time… provided that you leave enough time to recover afterwards. Whatever you do, DON’T make it the night before!
Make it mean more – alternative bucks parties
This is a trend we’ve seen with men’s wedding rings. Many men are breaking with the mould, instead opting for unique materials and designs over the traditional men’s wedding ring.
So it’s no surprise that many guys are extending it to their bucks parties too!
Getting drunk and hitting the clubs isn’t the only option anymore – many men are breaking with the “traditional” bucks party, instead choosing alternative activities with more personal meaning behind them.
Fancy yourself a bit of an outdoorsman? Why not make your bucks night into a bucks weekend and take your mates fishing at your favourite spot?
Big footy fan? Consider shelling out for box seats for you and the boys the next time your team is playing.
Are you a wine connoisseur? Indulge yourself – and your mates! Take your crew to a private tasting at your favourite vineyard, scotch bar or craft beer brewery.
Not only does it mean more to you, but you’ll also be able to start your marriage on the right note since you won’t have to contend with the killer hangover that usually follows.
Wedding day emergency kits
Ask any woman who’s due to get married, and they’ll tell you the same thing: an emergency wedding day kit is a must-have!
Complete with bobby pins, spare makeup, a sewing kit, nail polish, Panadol and more, this kit is crucial for all those unexpected minor crises that invariably pop up on the big day.
Who says we guys can’t have our own emergency kits?
What to include in your emergency kit
Okay, so you probably won’t find nail polish and bobby pins in the typical guy’s emergency kit. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t have a kit of your own!
There are plenty of things that you can include which can end up saving your day, like:
- Deodorant (it’s natural to get nervous!)
- Toothbrush and toothpaste (can’t have food scraps ruining those wedding photos!)
- Mints, to keep your breath minty fresh
- Spare set of glasses or contacts, if you wear them
- Energy drinks, if you need an extra burst of vigour!
- Mousse or gel to keep your ‘do looking fabulous
- A spare shirt (especially if it’s a hot day!)
- Panadol
- A list of emergency contacts (celebrant, event planner, etc.)
If you want, you can even include a flask if you need a shot of liquid courage (just make sure you don’t overdo it!)
Eat well, and drink plenty of water
Butterflies aren’t the only things you feel in your stomach on the big day – you might also feel hunger!
In the excitement and nervousness that comes with your wedding day, many grooms have been known to forget to eat in the lead-up!
Obviously, you want to leave room for the reception dinner and the cake. However, you don’t want to skip out altogether and have your stomach start rumbling halfway through your vows.
As the typical wedding starts in the afternoon, you’ve got more than enough time for at least one filling meal during the day.
Another thing to consider is your throat.
As the groom, you’ll be talking to a lot of people in the lead-up to the big moment. Combine that with the aggressive air conditioning of the venue, and your throat might be out of action when the time comes to say your vows or make your speech
And that’s why it’s so important to stay hydrated as well as fed!
And of course, you can’t forget your wedding rings!
Your wedding rings are the capstone to one of the most important days in your life. The last thing you want is for something to happen to them, or to have to delay everything because you can’t find them!
Tradition dictates that the best man is the one to hang onto both rings throughout the ceremony. That means that indirectly, the security of the rings falls onto the groom. You’re the one choosing your best man, after all!
Before you set off on your big day, be sure to talk to your best man and:
- Ensure your wedding rings are kept in a secure container
- Make sure that you both know where they are at all times
- Assign someone to look after them if for any reason the best man is unavailable
- Rehearse the ring presentation to ensure that it goes off without a hitch
How to keep your rings secure
The safest place to keep your wedding band is on your finger. Unfortunately, you can’t exactly do that until the vows come up.
So, what can you do to keep them secure in the lead-up to the big moment?
One way to start is to keep them locked up in a suitcase or lockbox. You can take this even further by keeping the exact lockbox a secret, with only you and the best man having copies of the keys or the combination.
The first step: choose a men’s wedding ring that means something to you
As with all things wedding-related, it’s important that your wedding ring has meaning for you and your spouse. After all, it’s YOUR big day as well!
While it may not be a last-minute thing like the rest of the items on the groom’s wedding day checklist, that doesn’t make this any less important.
